Fabrics that are good for the planet

Cassius Honey pieces and prints are designed and handmade-to-order by me at my home studio in West Sussex, UK.

On my search for fabric, I realised the perfect prints didn’t exist - yet! To make the dream a reality, it had to be a team effort. I hunted high and low for a manufacturer I could work with and still sleep at night (kids, The Grind permitting) without nightmares of climate change and sweatshops.

Sustainability was the most important factor, I want to make good quality fashion whilst minimising the impact of fashion's contribution to global pollution. I also want to run an ethical brand, it was important that there are fair wages and safe working conditions at every stage of the production process.

I designed three fabrics: a pink/off-white circus stripe in organic cotton/linen; an emerald/off-white candy stripe in organic cotton, and; a hand-drawn design decorated with pink & red bows, strawberries, roses, vines and flowers in organic cotton (I call it a picnic print cos it looks so gorge with gingham). I also machine embroider plain off-white cotton by hand (because I love hard work apparently).

I was so happy to find my fabric manufacturer. They do business differently (as in better) and put the ‘green’ in ‘it’s giving green flags’: prioritising sustainable materials, recyclability while minimising waste, emissions and iffy chemicals in their production process.

Here's some more fun facts about them too:

ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Cassius Honey fabrics are made in a facility which is Green Building certified and solar powered.

Chemical Management

Our fabric manufacturer use natural and azo free dyes, reducing the environmental impacts of our fabrics (they're also better for your skin!).

Organic & Environmentally Friendly

Our fabrics are all organic and GOTS certified. Anyone who is a bit in the know about sustainability will know that cotton loves drinking water, it's a thirsty process! Our manufacturers have planted 1000 trees around their weaving studio.

Ethical Sourcing & Management

Our fabric manufacturer make low quantity high value products. Artisanal textiles are produced in small batches, reducing overconsumption and thus environmental impacts.Weavers and artisans are employed all year round and are paid a fair living wage. They follow a circular fashion framework for how to adopt a circular economy, going against the grain of traditional linear business models - much like nature's own ecosystem (which we need to protect!!!).
